Let’s talk about reading goals, shall we?
As we enter a new year, my bookstagram feed is flooded with bookish goals, and as usual, I feel a lump of anxiety in the pit of my stomach. While I definitely think that 57 books in one year is a great feat, I see bookstagrammers who read more than 100 books each year. Absolutely no judgment on them; I think that’s awesome but I know that I will never be able to reach that goal myself.
A few years ago, before I became a mom, I decided to put quantity over quality, read books slowly, and enjoy the process. Not having a number to reach each year has helped quell my anxiety tremendously; I’ve been making my way through my reading list at my own pace and actually remembering the plot months afterward.
What about in 2024?
This year, I plan to adopt the same mindset, especially since I am welcoming another little girl to the world in just one month. I know the early postpartum stage will be tough, and while I’ve been through it before, I cannot anticipate how this baby will be! Nora was a good day sleeper, which I was grateful for, but my postpartum depression was too dark and I had trouble getting in the read headspace to read. I’m hoping that this time around I will be more prepared, but I will roll with the punches!
I will continue to practice quantity over quality, diving into books that interest me on my Kindle and through Book of the Month and Libby. I also plan to blog regularly about my reading experiences, including my monthly wrap-ups (even if I don’t finish a book!) and book reviews whenever the mood strikes. Whatever I experience in 2024, thank you for following along.
